Red-Green increases the real estate transfer tax
The real estate transfer tax in NRW will rise to 6.5 percent. This was decided by the SPD and Green factions in the state parliament on Tuesday (28.10.2014). From January 1, 2015, the tax is to be increased from the current 5 percent. Until now, Red-Green had always denied wanting to increase the tax.
The state government and the factions repeatedly denied all rumors of wanting to raise taxes in NRW due to the budget crisis. Now they are doing so after all. Next year, the real estate transfer tax will rise from 5 to 6.5 percent. This will burden citizens who want to buy houses or condominiums.
After the faction meetings on Tuesday, representatives of SPD and the Greens justified this step with the necessity to consolidate the budget. "This step was not easy for us," says SPD faction leader Norbert Römer. "However, we consider it necessary to further consolidate the budget." The Green faction leader Reiner Priggen expects additional revenues of 400 million euros per year. The money is intended to reduce new debt.
