Hello,

we visited local plumbing companies to inquire about a washbasin cabinet about 1 meter wide including the basin. The lowest price we were given was about €2000 just for the materials. Depending on the store, the price could then rise almost arbitrarily.

As an alternative, acquaintances mentioned a clearance warehouse where you can buy items as-is for about half the price.

Then we saw the Hemnes washbasin cabinet at Ikea. Since we don’t like glossy and futuristic styles but rather classic country house style, this is the first cabinet that appeals to us visually. Although I have seen several interesting things online as well.
With a "only" €350, it is even a surprisingly affordable price, although the question remains about the quality?

What bothers me much more about the Hemnes washbasin cabinet are the two feet in the front. I would like a completely floating cabinet. According to the assembly instructions (downloadable directly from Ikea on the product page), the cabinet is nevertheless anchored to the wall at four points.

I now wonder what happens (from a static point of view) if the four feet on the Hemnes washbasin cabinet are simply sawed off?
Will the cabinet fall off the wall after a few years, or will it hold just as securely as any other washbasin cabinet costing €4000?

If it might possibly fall off, does anyone have a suggestion on how to reinforce the Hemnes washbasin cabinet sensibly so that it can also hold while floating?

Thank you very much for further help.

Hello,
I don’t think sawing off the feet and hanging the sink cabinet is a good idea – the supplied "hanger" on the back wall is only intended to prevent tipping and is not meant to support the entire cabinet hanging.

How about building a support structure? Some kind of shelf, painted or lacquered white, about 20 cm above the floor, which is held to the wall with sufficiently long screws (is the wall sufficiently load-bearing??), and then you place the legless Hemnes on it?
Best regards

A shelf on the wall would already be a hassle, that would somehow be pointless for a new building.

because of different design, don't like it

I noticed another disadvantage with the Hemnes, which I find difficult to assess
so that the top drawer does not need a cutout in the middle for the siphon, the pipe in the Hemnes is completely flat and routed immediately under the sink itself towards the wall at the back and only then directed downwards.

I wonder whether this could cause a backup when a large amount of water flows, since the water does not fall down first, but has to flow almost horizontally to the wall.

Furthermore, all these components are only made of plastic as well as a flexible plastic pipe. A proper siphon is made of metal.

The alternative offer from the installer for a washbasin from the showroom is a bit more than €1000 higher. We had actually already decided on Hemnes, but the issue with the siphon will probably make us reconsider.

It has less to do with the new building and more with the chosen piece of furniture. People in old buildings would have to do the same. If you like the furniture, you just have to craft something.

No, no backup. We have that several times, also double washbasins, drains well.

That's where the price difference comes from after all. But you can also attach a metal siphon - if crafting HERE is an option for you.

The IKEA base cabinet is not stable "in itself," which is why the legs at the front are necessary. Furniture with legs in the bathroom is already a no-go. Take a look at online retailers. For under 500 euros, you can get a Keramag Icon 60cm washbasin with a matching base cabinet. Just as an example.
