Basically, you are right, but these agents are no more or less chemical than any "hanging things" you usually see in toilet bowls. Otherwise, little or no use of chemicals is necessary, because these things also have a cleaning effect. However, it works for us so far.

I'll throw the "Subway 2.0 Tiefspül-WC spülrandlos" from V & B into the ring. Supplied with water from a domestic waterworks or cistern for a year now, no chemicals added since then (I hate those things) and still clean. Comfortable, nothing splashes, and I find it "elegant".
