Good morning builders

Yesterday I bought a semi-detached house with a 1000sqm plot.
It was mostly renovated in the 90s, only the windows are still from 1988. So old wooden double-glazed windows. I now want to replace them. How do I measure them correctly, since I want to order some with shutters from Fensteragentur online? The current windows have wooden roller shutters above the window, so in the masonry. I already have a cost estimate for the 6 windows from a local window fitter but there are no measurements on it. They should cost 2900 euros + installation costs if ordered by 12-09. The installation would take place on 01-10 for 700 euros. I find that a bit too much since they don’t have soundproofing.
Thank you very much for your help
Regards
Steven

Hello,

much is relative, now imagine you measure the windows and then none of them fit, then you have to order new ones, which is definitely much more expensive.

Measuring windows is not that easy and also depends on the structural conditions. Basically, you measure the clear wall opening in width and height and leave about 10 mm clearance all around.

But then it depends on the window rebate, possibly a wider frame is needed, then on the lower connection, windowsill, here a rebate must be made or possibly a windowsill connection, then the drillings for the fastening, then you have to consider if an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) might be applied later, then wider frames are needed and so on and so forth.

I strongly advise you to leave it alone and have the windows measured by someone who knows the subject, otherwise it will get expensive.

I would also keep in mind when measuring that window sills may possibly be added. Usually, a profile has to be screwed under the window for this. That would then have to be taken into account when determining the height. Overall, the window situation is not so simple with proper installation. I am currently preparing to install windows in my garage, and you really have to be careful with sealing, compression tape, connection profiles, and so on and so forth. There are also quite large quality differences with windows. Especially with wooden windows, as they are supposed to last a bit longer.

Please don't!

Replacing old double windows with new ones requires a professional because there are simply too many things to consider.
- Frame installation depth
- Connection for interior and exterior window sills
- Glazing, Ug, Uw
- Which fittings
- Which sun protection? Roller blind with crank operation (requires a wider cover strip)
- etc. etc.

I don't accept the argument that the local window manufacturer didn't offer soundproof glass.
Everyone has it; you just have to ask.
The extra cost is about 15 euros per square meter, and even the standard off-the-shelf window he offered you already has significantly better soundproofing than your 20-year-old ones.

Furthermore, no one knows what the 700 euros installation cost includes.
What is covered by that?
- Dismantling
- Disposal
- Installation
- RAL installation?
- Plastering work

In any case, I would strongly advise against measuring yourself, ordering yourself, and installing yourself if you obviously have no idea and only want to rely on the internet.
