How often should one normally fertilize the lawn?

Hello, I have a question, how often is it sensible to fertilize the lawn? The packaging says to fertilize twice a year but then the lawn always grows like crazy and I have to mow much more often for 3-4 weeks. Is there any way to avoid this or am I doing something wrong?

Hello,
if you want to have a nice lawn, you have to fertilize twice a year. It is clear that the lawn will grow more for a while afterwards, but in return, you will have a denser lawn. I fertilize once in spring and once in autumn. Because then the soil has enough nutrients for the winter and that gives a better start when the warm weather begins.

Hello, I also fertilize the lawn twice a year, but I do it in such a way that I fertilize quite late the second time. Then the lawn doesn’t grow so vigorously anymore. It is more about giving the soil enough fertilizer so that it gets through the winter well.

When fertilizing, you have to be careful not to do it when the sun is shining. It is best to fertilize in the evening because the dew then dissolves the fertilizer and it gets well into the soil. Or you wait until rain is forecast.

Fertilizing Lawn

Hello Paddel
Why do you absolutely want to fertilize your lawn? Are you aiming for an English lawn or more of a utility lawn?
On my property, I have two large lawn areas that I have never fertilized. The lawn doesn’t necessarily need fertilizer; it grows quite well on its own.
However, if you definitely want to fertilize it, I would recommend using liquid fertilizer at a low concentration (dilute with water). About half of the dosage indicated on the package. That way, you can fertilize your lawn more often and maintain the nutrient levels of the lawn constantly without giving it intensive nutrient boosts.
Frequent fertilizing with a low fertilizer concentration should give you even lawn growth.

Best regards, Förster

Most sensible: Never! an "English lawn" is a sterile thing, biologically no more valuable than a plastic lawn. Without fertilization, on the other hand, a species-rich natural meadow develops.
