Hello,

we are currently in the construction phase and are considering how many LED spotlights we need in the living room. The living room has 40 sqm and borders the south side where there is a terrace window about 5.40 m wide.

Since I really don't know much about electricity, volts, and watts, my question to the building professionals is this:

Would someone take the trouble to draw them in for me? The TV should hang on the right wall noon.

Thanks in advance

Hello,
yes, the thing with the light, you have to study that nowadays. We also first thought about how much light we need? How is it with halogen, how do I know how bright they are? Disaster. There is only one thing that helps: you have to know the lumens of the light sources. Meanwhile, you can find comparison tables on some websites. A good reference point is: a 100 watt incandescent bulb had about 1500 lumens. Since I have quite poor eyesight, I needed 2x 100 watt incandescent bulbs to illuminate a room of about 20m². That means for 40m² I would try to reach at least 6000 lumens. So 6000 divided by the lumens of the chosen light source is the number of spotlights (for blind people like me).

Hello

I would also be interested in this topic. Our developer has provided for a flat rate of 30 ceiling spots for the ground floor. The developer installs the corresponding Halox profiles into the concrete ceiling. We just have to inform them in time where and how many spots we want.

But even after a long search, I can't find any indication of how much light per sqm is to be planned for a living room. If I had that, I could relatively quickly calculate how many spots I would need, for example, in the living room...

Who can help me with this?

What I also don't understand:

On Wikipedia, the recommended illuminance for bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, and children's rooms is given as 50-300 lux.

50 - 300 lux result in a recommended light output of 2,000 - 12,000 lumens for a 40m² living room.

This would mean that if I want to use an LED spot with 280 lumens, I would have to use 7 - 42 (!!) spots in the living room to achieve the recommended illuminance...

What kind of recommendation is 50 - 300, why is the range so large? I could understand a recommendation of 50 - 80 or 250 - 300, but not such a large range?

Hello aytex, lighting intensity depends so much on personal taste when designing a house/apartment, my parents-in-law sit almost in the dark in the evening while eating, whereas I like it quite bright. I did it so that I first decided on an LED type (for me 230V 4W GU10 LED spotlights), then I got several samples from different manufacturers and just tested them at home in the dark. That way you get a pretty good feeling for the necessary distance. The room/furniture layout also plays a role; in my living/dining area (42m²) I have 20 spots (1.50*1.25 grid), and in the kitchen (14 m², where I like it a bit brighter) I ended up with 8 spots (0.80*1.00 grid). You can also drive yourself crazy spending hours with lumen specifications and software (Dialux), but honestly, how do most people do it in apartments? They have a lamp connection in the middle of the room, get a lamp from the hardware store, and that's it
