From an ecological point of view, you shouldn't build new now at all and certainly not deviate from a general contractor standard that is closest to your economic thinking! But who wants to spend €400k and more and build cheaply so that it's economical. I definitely don't. My goal is to build in such a way that when I come home from work in the evening and get up in the morning, I enjoy having built something beautiful every time. Or, put differently, if having a roof over my head would be enough, I would buy a barn.
