Hello everyone,

I have a quick question regarding tiling patterns. I know it’s a matter of taste, but I’m wondering what makes the most sense for our situation. We are having 60x30 tiles laid in light beige. Specifically in the hallway, which is elongated (almost 1.8 by 6 m). And in the adjacent small guest bathroom and storage room (probably the least noticeable place). Then there is the adjoining kitchen with about 11 sqm (slightly rectangular or almost square). We are undecided between "wild" and 1/3 bond. I think visually the difference shouldn’t be that big, but what do you think makes more sense from your experience? I don’t want a cross joint. Maybe some additional info: the tiles are rectified.

For such short tiles, I would go with 1/3 or 1/2 (Note: plan for more waste). A random pattern does not look that good there, in my opinion.

Hello questioner. This is a difficult topic you are addressing. Because it is closely linked to the aspect of aesthetics. What appears visually appealing to one person is rejected by another. In this respect, no one can give you an answer to your questions, as solely your personal taste determines which laying pattern will be used. I have once furnished the hallway as well as the kitchen with the room and tile dimensions you provided (see attached photo). The proportions therefore largely correspond to your living space. Now you can decide for yourself which laying pattern you prefer. If you are interested in my personal opinion: The cross joint visually represents a certain order, while the half-bond makes the overall picture "wilder," and the quarter bond and ship bond make the surface appear very restless. The latter seems to me to be a laying pattern to wake up immediately in the morning when you look at the tile surface :) The aspect "additional consumption according to laying pattern" is actually marginal! Since this hint came from another source in the meantime, I quickly calculated it. For "Hallway 1" and "Hallway 3" you need 60 tiles each, for "Hallway 2" it is 65 tiles. For "Kitchen 1" and "Kitchen 3" I calculated 62 tiles, for "Kitchen 2" it is 65 tiles. ------------------------------------ Wishing you a good decision: KlaRa

In this case, probably a matter of taste. I would vote for 1/3.

Just lay them out on a piece and then decide. I think it's hard to give advice on that, it's a matter of taste.

Thank you very, very much for your reply! That’s awesome. And thanks also to and for your answers. I spoke with the tiler today, as he is currently preparing, and he advised against "wild" because the tiles apparently are not completely flat or have a slight hump. He said 1/3 would also work, but the risk of interlocking (?) is greater. I didn’t buy DIY store tiles but from a tile specialist dealer, but apparently it’s quite common that tiles are not completely flat, he said. He sent me 2 pictures showing how 1/3 vs. wild would look (see attachment). The 1/3 pattern obviously looks more ordered, but if the installation is easier with that I might prefer the "wild" pattern. In the kitchen, a good part is covered by the kitchen furniture anyway. In the hallway, it might be different.
