Hello everyone, we received the plans from the architect today and the garage driveway is supposed to have a 12 degree incline. Do you think my cars (new 5 series and 3 series BMW) will bottom out there? Up to what degree can you drive over without any problems? Are there ways to minimize the incline? The driveway is approximately 5m long and 70cm at the highest point. Thank you all.

You should probably ask that question in a car forum

Hi!

I'm not a technician, but:

The height difference will be 5 meters 60 cm, otherwise the gradient would be 14%. With a constant slope, it is 12 cm per meter. If I assume an axle distance of (at least) 2.50 meters, the height difference would already be 30 cm. Unless I am making a calculation error here, only a Jeep can manage that.

Best regards,
Tomtom.

@Tomtom

you are talking about slope in %. VanTide talks about degrees.

But VanTide's degrees are not correct. Depending on whether the 5 m represent the sloped driveway or the length on the plan, sine or tangent would have to be applied, and you would get just above or below 8 degrees.

However, in your calculation, you also have a thinking error. Between the wheels, the 30 cm (or 35 cm) is halved again because you have the greatest height difference exactly 1.25 m after the front wheel and 1.25 m before the rear wheel. But the problem can be not only at the top but also at the bottom of the driveway. With a long vehicle front and a low front apron, you can also scrape there.
When braking down, the vehicle also tilts forward a bit.
However, you should not only consider the "empty state" of the car but also keep in mind that sometimes you come back fully loaded from vacation.

The question is how do I get the topic under control? Do you have any ideas? Are there any tricks for the [Einfahrt]?

1. First clarify what slope or angle the driveway actually has. Your information is contradictory. Only then can you calculate properly. 2. Fully load the car including people and measure the clearances. 3. Take a tape measure with you and just check out different underground garages over the next period. If you find one that roughly matches your angle, you can test with your car. 4. If the driveway is not uniform with sharp bends at the top and bottom, but rather gentle bends with a somewhat steeper middle section, that could also provide a few centimeters of "clearance". I cannot say whether this is feasible for 5 m length.
