Garage approved, but carport built

Hello,
I have a question about building law. Our foundation stone for the single-family house was laid almost exactly 15 years ago. The house and the garage with ancillary rooms were planned and approved. The house was completed immediately, the garage 1.5-2 years later. Due to lack of money, however, no garage was built, only the ancillary rooms (today our utility room) and a carport. Now we have noticed that the carport is almost 1 meter wider than the garage would have been. It was handled through the construction company. Could this become a problem for us afterwards? Can I report it somewhere and get it approved afterwards without anything "worse" happening?
Thank you and best regards
Julia

Now – after you have already lived there for 15 years or now in the sense of realization after buying a used property? In the first case, the question arises whether you want to fool the forum users? If you agree to the 2nd alternative, talk to the building authority and see what happens. Nobody will tear down the carport for you. Rhineland regards

I am sorry. You misunderstood me. I do not understand the allusion regarding the first case about "making fun of others." I joined the forum with the idea of wanting to build. We had or have the opportunity to do so. We now also live great, but we are missing one room. In the last 8 weeks, we have learned a lot. We are no longer so sure about a new build; we are risking a lot to dare a new start. The question is whether it is worth it to us. Because, as I said, we own property and basically live nicely. Our house is still listed for sale. We would prefer to buy a property, as then we know what we have and it is less stressful. But the offers are currently scarce, as everywhere. Our Plan B looks like this: we stay and continue to renovate and change here. In addition, we want to convert an old sheet metal garage, a remnant of my grandfather who originally lived here, with wood. For this, I called the building authority to inquire whether that would be allowed, as the garage would become 3 sqm larger. This led to the question of whether my grandfather even got this garage approved 40 years ago. WE had a garage plus ancillary rooms approved for our single-family house 15 years ago. As already stated above, only the ancillary rooms were built and instead of the garage, a carport. In the course of the sheet metal garage issue, I took a tape measure to measure and saw that the carport is 1 meter wider than the garage would have been. That is how it is NOW. We had 1.5-year-old triplets at home then; it was extremely stressful, and we were just over 20 years old. Of course, ignorance of the law is no excuse, so I am currently trying to educate myself. If my "story" is now being questioned here, nothing else is needed. I do not want to talk myself into trouble. I will not ask any further questions. I can only prove my authenticity to a limited extent.

I could "neither/nor" understand you; you have been too sparing with information so far.

I was "just" over 20 once too; but I have always grasped the difference between 3.00 and 4.00 m.

Why not tear it down?

"Sorry, my grandfather is no longer alive (I hope I understood your post correctly) and therefore can no longer be asked?"

Nope – it has been like that for 15 years!

Even if I am stepping on your toes now: don’t tell me; I also know your hedge. You have known for a long time that you built wider than approved.

The "offended" sore loser won’t get you anywhere.

Although I am sure I can "feel it with my fingers" (I haven't closed my jeans with pliers for a long time), I gave you a good tip. Use it or continue playing the role of the reformed mid-thirty-year-old.

Rhineland regards

- I'm a bit surprised that this is such a big deal for you. It happens daily for us that during new measurements we find that something has been built here and there, differently or additionally.

: It's no drama ... if ... the carport as it stands is basically eligible for approval. Then you submit a building application for the carport, pay a bit more than if the carport weren't already there, and the matter is settled.

The alternative is, of course, demolition, but it's not worth it unless it can only be legalized with great effort or not at all.

Best regards

Big deal - no. I simply don't believe that the OP wants to have "discovered" only 15 years later that they had built over by 1.00 m back then

Rhenish greetings
