In the State Building Code for Schleswig-Holstein, the following is stated on the subject of full stories:

Full stories are above-ground floors if at least three quarters of their floor area have a height of at least 2.30 m. A top floor recessed relative to at least one exterior wall of the building or a floor with at least one sloping roof surface is a full story if it has a height of at least 2.30 m over at least three quarters of the floor area of the story below; the height of the stories is measured from the upper edge of the floor to the upper edge of the floor of the ceiling above, in the case of stories with roof surfaces up to the upper edge of the roof covering.

We want to build a house with a gable roof and are considering placing a captain's gable on the north side and either another captain's gable on the south side or extending the gable roof in an L-shape.

Concerning the State Building Code, we have the following questions:

Is the wall footprint included in the floor area of the upper story or only the floor area of the individual rooms?

What about the stairwell; is it counted as part of the floor area?

And the last sentence ";the height of the stories [..]" — does this apply only to the recessed upper stories or is it generally valid?

Thank you very much!

Thank you for the response.

Let's see if I understand this correctly:

We can build the gable roof between 35° and 45°. Width of the gable side on the ground floor approx. 12m.

I assumed the floor structure to be 20cm.

For simplicity, I assumed the knee wall height to be 1m.

If I now measure the 2.3m from the finished floor to the top edge of the roof, then in the 45° example I get a length of 8.53m. If I understand correctly, this is relevant for the percentage consideration?

To which length must I now relate this? To the 9.6m measured between the two knee walls?

In Hesse, this always refers, for example, to the area of the floor below. It is the same in your quoted text. Applied to your case, I would therefore assume that you have to relate the 8.53 to the 13.53 - assuming now that there is no roof overhang in your picture.

Yes, the picture is difficult to understand. Where are the 12m from the ground floor? Why is the gable triangle at 35° wider than at 45°?
Let's assume you have correctly determined the dimensions of the 2.30m lines and you have a rectangular floor plan with a gable roof without roof structures, that is, without dormers or cross gables ([Kapitänsgiebel]). Then the calculation at 35° would look like this:
6.74m / 12.00m = 0.56 < 0.75 => no full storey
at 45°
8.53m / 12.00m = 0.71 < 0.75 => no full storey
At 45°, it becomes tight with additional [Kapitänsgiebel] because they significantly increase the area with more than 2.30m height. For that, however, you would have to enter the 2.30m lines in the upper floor plan ([OG]) and thus determine the actual areas.

Thank you for the information! That helps me for now. Then I can draw the lines in Sketchup and calculate what works and what doesn't. Happy Easter!
