Floor plan for repurposing old cattle barn (ground floor)

my girlfriend and I are currently planning to convert an existing old cattle barn on my father's farm, unused for 20 years, into residential use.

I don't want to discourage you - but what does the responsible building authority say about your plans? Creating living space on agricultural farms is not so easy. If allowed at all, it is only possible within quite narrow limits, aka retirement home ... at least in NRW.

In Lower Saxony, this has long been practiced: converting vacant barns, oversized farms, and plots with barns into residential buildings and either developing individual apartments or single-family homes.

This is clearly visible in established villages for everyone to see; it might not apply to outer areas, no idea.

So the approval process is still ongoing at the moment, but our architect (specialized in such projects) sees no reason why approval should not be granted. The buildings themselves are already approved.

Regarding an [Altenteiler] (separate building), however, that is correct. Our architect gave us little hope for success there. That would also significantly limit the living area, if approval was granted at all (outdoor area etc.).

But as I said, regarding the change of use, there will (hopefully) be no problems.

By the way, our architect has an appointment at the building authority today to discuss the missing documents (we are quite excited and also a bit nervous).

We will continue to present our project in other areas, as we still have countless questions ;-).
