If you know everything better, then why do you ask? Call it floor, storey, or level.

I'm out.

A maisonette apartment has two floors, several rooms downstairs, a staircase inside the apartment, several rooms upstairs as well, and both floors are included in the calculation.

I would not describe an apartment with an open rafters and a "Hühnerleiter" to a floor for a mattress as a maisonette apartment, and in terms of area would evaluate it as if this intermediate floor did not exist.

You even come across something like this in a house-building forum.
I don't understand the reaction of that kind, I don't see where my answer gave any reason for unfriendliness.
I already thought that yesterday when I read another thread here that said "how did you manage to pass your studies", without being provoked.

Possibly the definitions are different, as in various national building codes and apparently also in fire protection there are seemingly different descriptions.
The version I know as commonly encountered is that a gallery apartment has two levels but occupies only one floor or story.
Presumably, there are also cases where a gallery apartment extends over two stories or floors, instead of like mine just over the attic, then it is no longer just two levels but in such cases two floors or stories.
Probably there are other variants as well, and then other terms apply. I have not delved deeper into this topic, as my question was actually only whether the upper level (in one floor or story) counts towards the total usable area of the apartment or not.

But anyway, thanks for the leaving and staying.
If in a bad mood, leaving before posting would be more pleasant, I don't want to catch it.

OK - if I understand correctly, the upper area is counted as additional usable space if there are rooms with dividing walls and doors, and not counted if the upper level is open, without walls and doors? Open galleries of various sizes exist with small or also large, opulent staircases.

Don’t make it so complicated. Even Wiki knows something about maisonette/gallery apartments.

For your calculation anyway Humpe: Calculation of living space from memory for Lower Saxony: with sloping ceilings under one meter height it is not counted at all, between 1 and 2 meters counted half, everything above fully.
It doesn’t matter how many levels the areas are spread over.

No idea where you live: probably handled similarly where you are.

There is a misunderstanding, I didn't ask any question about living space calculation. It's only about a specific question regarding usable space - but that does indeed get complicated if terms are separated off-topic or living space calculation is described.
But I can't help that, the question clearly stated what it is actually about.
