The fireplace will hardly be burning when the residents are asleep. I would therefore install it in the living room with some distance from the fireplace.

It was probably not the stove but a fuel-powered generator inside. Don’t be mad at me, but I almost want to say: it’s hard to believe.

Hi,

Despite all the tragedy and respect and condolences to the relatives:
If that is really true, the six have bravely qualified themselves for the Darwin Award...
With that stunt, they're already right at the top….

Then probably both. If it beeps downstairs, do you wake up upstairs? Same problem as with the smoke detectors. Solution: Networked devices.

I just read that a power generator was said to be responsible for the CO emissions – although this sounds only semi-official so far. It was operated in the cabin... if that is true, the owner, if he installed the generator there, will probably find himself in court soon. Unfortunately, this incident then falls into the category of "lack of common sense."

A few years ago, there was an incident at Wacken Open Air. A visitor lay down to sleep on a trailer after a night of heavy partying. Under the tarpaulin, under which the power generator also stood... you can imagine the rest.

When the fireplace is burning, the risk of too much CO forming is extremely low, because CO is produced in larger quantities when there is too little oxygen. When the fire is burning, there is enough oxygen. At least, that's how I understand it.

As a precaution, I would install a detector in a room with the hazard source (here: fireplace), and another device (or several) on the upper floor near the bedrooms. However, one should also consider their potentially individual floor plan.

So I ordered two, to place one near the fireplace and one in the bedroom. The few euros are worth it to me for the supposed extra safety for 7 years. And after 7 years, new ones just have to be bought.
