Thank you very much for your advice, experiences, and ideas.
What I took away:
-Renovation is very expensive and probably very complex. 170 sqm x 2000 euros amounts to 340k. Currently, a really nice, almost move-in ready semi-detached house with 160 sqm of living space, built in 2000, is listed in our area for 339k.
-Thoughts that family conflicts can arise if additional family members (or their partners) feel disadvantaged, no matter how good the current relationship is.
-that there are very different attitudes towards dealing with private loans / gifts etc.
-that people in the middle class currently have quite a hard time financing the dream of their own home.
