Fiber optic expansion by 1&1 or Telekom - Who pays for the construction trenches?

Hello everyone,

miracles happen, fiber optic connections are being installed in the greater Nuremberg area. Maybe we'll finally move up from third last place on the OECD fiber ranking...

Since the day before yesterday, some funny characters from Telekom have been running around here trying to sell fiber contracts because fiber is supposed to be laid here in 2023. Now 1&1 also offers contracts with activation in 01_2024. But they probably won’t dig up the street a second time (which would have been expected in DigitalChaosLand Germany) but will rent the lines from Telekom.

If you order now, the “connection costs” of 800 euros will be covered by Telekom or 1&1. But what nobody has been able to tell me exactly or even give me in writing so far is what exactly is included in these “connection costs”?

There is talk about excavations in the garden, laying techniques, ground rockets, etc. But nowhere is it explicitly stated whether I have to pay for the excavations and the restoration of the “original condition” or if the 800 € connection costs really cover everything.

When the house was originally built, I also had to pay for the trench for the telephone line, so I’m a bit suspicious now.

If all of that were included, it would be amazing and everyone would be crazy not to have fiber installed now. Two excavations on the property, one with pavement and the other with terrace slabs, laying the line underground, pressure-resistant conduit into a “white tub,” etc. You could actually add a zero to the 800€!

Long story short; here is the question:

Has anyone already had fiber installed afterwards and can tell me what was included in the connection costs? Or whether the excavations still had to be provided by the builder?

Thanks and best regards,

Andreas

The connection costs are indeed free, provided you decide to connect while the network is being expanded in the respective location.
There will be no additional construction pit on your property. Normally, the empty conduit is laid with the earth rocket up to your house. In our case, it is about 80 meters from the street to the house. For this, 4 or 5 small holes were dug, no more.
If you have an existing [Mehrsparteneinführung], it can be used. Otherwise, it will just be drilled anew.

Just because the expansion is supposed to start this year does not mean that the connection will also be completed then. In our area, there is already more than half a year delay in the network expansion. Better calculate with the end of 2024 before the connection really runs.

Fiber optic but not the normal connection - because fiber optic is not yet possible for us. And the 800€ (identical) also include all costs up to 15m cable length. Anything above that has to be paid by yourself. This is just a contribution to the costs, just like with water/electricity - at least with us as a flat rate. Of course, not all costs are covered by this. The amount can vary regionally, it can also go up to the actual cost in the five-digit range or be free as a promotion.

Hi,

And how do you prevent the earth rocket from first damaging the other water, electricity, gas, ventilation, and sewage pipes that are all in the way?

The concept is still not really clear to me...?!?

Best regards,

Andreas

Either you have plans of the cables or the empty conduits are generally installed at a different depth. But I wouldn’t worry about that, they’re not doing this for the first time. The general procedure is always the same and is very well described on the websites of the respective providers, sometimes even with videos. The house connection is only a very small part; the empty conduits first have to be laid in the streets, where there is also electricity, gas, water, etc... ;-)

Here with us (ein Ortsteil von Berlin) the fiber optic connection was completely free for us in 12/22, some expansion program from the federal government. Everything was included, cable on the street, cable on the property with a 60m cable trench, house entry (drilling and sealing), connection of a Telekom box.
