Hello everyone

We live in a very old apartment where there is a fuse box with screw fuses. These serve for circuit protection.

Now I have had a child and I am wondering how I can most easily get RCD protection. The fuse box is very tight, RCD switches that are mounted on a rail are too big for the box.

QUESTION: Are there RCD switches that can be inserted like a household fuse/screw fuse? The device should of course provide both circuit protection and residual current protection. If yes, where can one buy such a thing.

Regards

Stefan.

PS: I can imagine that many electricians see this as absolute makeshift, but if you live in an old rental apartment (and maybe move out soon), a cost-effective solution would be advantageous :)

Hello Newbee,

if something is to be changed at the fuse box, then only by a professional. How old is the building or the electrical wiring, because an RCD sometimes requires more modern wiring to really be effective.

To say more precisely, you would have to tell me the approximate age.

By the way, all the best for your little one.

Roland

Thank you Roland.

Now, the building is about 40 years old. The wiring has never been renovated.

If it is not possible to install an RCD at the distribution board/fuse box, then one would have to be installed at every socket. Can the wiring be tested by a professional to see if it is suitable for an RCD at the distribution board?

QUESTION: Are there models that can be fixed (e.g. surface-mounted) (or replacing the sockets)?

PS: The actual question, whether there is an RCD in the form of a screw fuse, has not yet been answered. ;)

PPS: The little button is almost 3 years old, a second buttonhole will be filled in the next few days.. :)

Hello,

let's just say there are many things in the industry, but whether everything always makes that much sense is questionable. Even houses that are only half as old usually do not have RCD protection. When you are on site, you can check which cables are installed and, above all, whether the sockets are well protected. Where do you live, maybe I can recommend someone to you who can advise you on site and see what is possible with the existing construction.

Regards
Roland

Hello, have you already spoken to your landlord and shared your concerns regarding the security? Normally, it falls under modernization and if you're lucky, the landlord will have it modernized at their own expense. Regards Erika
