Good day,

I probably have a problem with my wall.
Mold was visible on the wallpaper, and the smell was not pleasant either. The wallpaper was removed, underneath were insulation boards, so an internal insulation. The material of the insulation is unknown to me, possibly cork??? I will attach pictures. Probably from old times, the house was built at the end of the 18th century. What worries me the most are the joints between the masonry. Are these bricks? What are they called? The joints can be completely removed very easily with a finger or screwdriver. To me, it looks like sand from a sandbox. This is not mortar like nowadays that is really hard, that would crumble out, or am I mistaken?
What was used here for the joints? With what can I refill the joints? Despite everything, no stone is loose or even easy to loosen.
The part of the wall is not cellared.
How should I proceed best?
Thank you very much in advance, I would be very happy to receive answers :)

Year of construction of the house?

In case of doubt, you have to dig out from the outside down to the foundation walls and insulate. After that, the wall should be dry and it saves the interior insulation.

Thank you for the response, exact year of construction unknown, approximately 1880. What about a horizontal barrier? What are the experiences with that? What kind of mortar do I have? Is it clay?

Phew, it seems like the simplest basics of old building renovation are missing here. Sandy joints are normal, they need to be scraped out, swept out, primed, pre-wetted, and replastered with joint mortar. Horizontal barrier? The house is very old. There won't be (any) more. There are dozens of ways to renew it. Get a professional!! Also in general. You have an old house and obviously very little knowledge. You need someone who has an overview and can guide you, otherwise you'll make a lot of mistakes and start all over again in 3 years.

Thank you for the response. Actually, I have no idea and therefore I am trying to gather information. Is material from the hardware store generally recommended, for example now the joint mortar, can I buy it without concerns regardless of the brand at the hardware store? Or should one commit to a system from a certain manufacturer? I am an automotive mechatronics technician, in our industry the quality of the material plays a significant role. I am not aware if that is also the case here. Can you recommend manufacturers for construction?
Best regards, Benny

I have not been able to notice extreme differences in building materials so far. I like to use Sakret joint mortar. That comes more into play later with things like paint and flooring. But so far, we have not noticed any major differences with various plasters, etc., and I buy from both the building materials trade and hardware stores. You will then have to insulate and find out where the moisture came from and eliminate the cause, as well as install insulation that actually works. It probably won't be that simple. This is not something that can be clarified remotely through a forum. The house is old. That in itself is not a problem. But who knows what has been worsened or installed in the last decades. Old houses need to be skillfully renovated; otherwise, nothing good will come of it.
