I am planning to convert a barn and want to heat the apartment (approx. 100 m²) using a water-based ceiling heating system. Does anyone have experience with ceiling heating systems? My research mainly led to their use in industrial buildings; there seems to be little experience with ceiling heating systems in private residential construction. For energy generation, I am planning an air heat pump.

Thanks in advance for your experiences

To my knowledge, the same physical laws apply to both private and commercial use. Since warm air rises upwards in both scenarios, I am not so sure how practical a ceiling heating system is. Besides, there must also be reasons why no one or hardly anyone does something like that. What would be your reasons for building such a ceiling heating system?

A lot of office buildings are heated this way. However, it is more of a byproduct of the cooling ceiling in the summer. The operating principle is mainly thermal radiation. I have been working in an office heated this way for 20 years and have nothing negative to say about ceiling heating systems.

Heat pumps are okay because the supply temperature should be low. Roughly estimated, the supply temperature should not exceed body temperature; otherwise, the head becomes too warm. For example, there are suspended drywall ceiling systems that are activated. Whether the heating output fits your building needs to be calculated. If you choose such a system, I would also consider the possibility of cooling in summer right away. You might possibly need a dew point sensor as a precaution.

In new buildings, it is used less because the screed has to be done anyway, making underfloor heating quite easy to integrate.

Hello,

I have been a passive reader for a long time, but I can report from my experiences with ceiling heating, so this is my first post.

We have been living for 3 years in a 40-year-old terraced house with ceiling heating. Ours is heated by gas. Flow temperature 35 degrees. Advantages: - Heat distribution: nicely even like with underfloor heating. Pleasant room climate. I once read that ceiling heating works well up to a room height of 3m. With our 2.50 m very good. - Floor covering freely selectable - Carpets, lots of furniture, etc. no problem. The ceiling is usually free anyway.

Disadvantages: - Installing lamps becomes a test of courage. After extensive renovation, we still have not dared to drill. The construction lamps are still hanging :-( The cables are also hard to detect in winter even when fully turned up. Infrared thermometers also provide too little security - Cold feet like with conventional radiators

Conclusion: In renovation, without wanting to redo the screed, ceiling heating is certainly worth considering. Lamp problem (+ curtain rods etc.) must be urgently considered in planning.

Right the first result for "making ceiling heating visible":

Can I drill a hole (for a curtain rod or lamp) in the ceiling without damaging the heating pipe of the ceiling heating?
Yes, there are special thermal films that make the heating pipes beneath the plaster visible. A digital locator device also works.

Dares are all well and good, but I didn't want to live with temporary fittings forever either.

Our neighbors have been doing it for six years already ... But possibly that is one of the reasons why it has not been able to establish itself in the private sector.
