I myself have no experience with architects at all, but a good acquaintance of mine was once pretty much ripped off, involving several thousand.

I think that the majority of architects do their job just as well as other people who work. With a few exceptions, you can trust an architect to that extent.

Architects can help a lot because they know so much more than you do. You just have to be careful that it is still your own wishes that are realized, not those of the architect.

Most good architects also have a corresponding reputation, and I believe that can be relatively easily found out by speaking with previous clients.
