Excessive glass thickness for terrace windows due to weight reasons

Hello everyone,
my windows are going to be replaced soon. A terrace window to be changed is 240cm wide and 218cm high. Currently, there is a wooden window of this size from the 70s installed. Now the provider tells me that, due to weight reasons, he can only install it as 2 separate elements. When I asked, he said that for structural reasons he would otherwise have to use a window with 8-16-10 laminated safety glass. Can that be correct? It seems extremely oversized to me.

Such an element can easily weigh around 300kg. But why it should be less if 2 single elements weigh less does not make sense to me.

According to the OP's post, the glazier could then use thinner glass = less weight.

I think I phrased my question a bit imprecisely.
I am aware that a pane in the mentioned design probably weighs 250kg or more and is therefore very difficult to install.
The question, however, is whether such a glass thickness is really necessary for a window of this size.
And why laminated safety glass? That is, 5-14-5mm or 6-16-6mm.
The currently installed pane does not seem to be thicker...

The question was actually whether a washer in the design 5-14-5mm or 6-16-6mm would also suffice.
