For soil improvement in fields, only the approximately 50 cm thick topsoil layer is actually suitable. However, one might just as well keep that for oneself. Deeper soil layers are initially dead without fertilization. Living soil contains plant fibers, worms, is full of seeds. Not much is down below. Unless the land was previously a deeply plowed field, then good soil can extend up to 1 m. After that, it's over. Therefore, I can't really imagine what a farmer would want with excavated soil, unless he has a pond or something he wants to fill in. Karsten
