Hello,

we bought a house at the beginning of the year. I have always wondered about the high electricity consumption. At first, I thought it was due to the renovation-related tools/machines. Now everything is mostly finished, and the electricity consumption is still there. Since no electrical device was connected, it could only come from the heating. So I had an alternating current meter installed in the fuse box for the heating fuse. And lo and behold: the average daily electricity consumption of the heating is 3KW.

Is that normal or particularly high?

Devices:

Hot water storage pump: Grundfos Type UPS 25-40 180 Heating pump: Wilo Type StarRS25/4 Burner: Type designation: EK01.3L-NH / Nominal heat output: 23KW / Year of manufacture: DA Heating: DeDietrich GT/GTM 114 / Heat output: 21-27 KW / Electrical power: 100-200W

If I calculate the 3 KW per day, I come to over 1000 KW per year.

Is something wrong here? Are the devices bad/too old? Would it be worthwhile to replace something in terms of cost/benefit ratio?

Thank you very much and best regards

That may be true, the parts aren't exactly new, are they?

The 3 kWh/day means 125 W power all day long. The heater takes 100-200W, your heating pump 30-80W depending on the power level, etc. Of course, they don't run around the clock, but that's not so unreasonable during the heating period. Or if the pump, for example, were completely stupid and ran continuously.

Ok thanks. No, the devices are no longer new. Then I will probably run the whole thing for a year and see what effectively comes out. Then, if necessary, exchange one or the other device. Thank you very much and best regards.

Had a very old gas boiler, which also used about 2-4 kWh per day in winter. Old circulation pumps with fixed power, after all. So I would consider that within reason. With our new boiler, I only use 1/4 of that electrically...

If I am not mistaken, there is a funding program for the replacement of circulation pumps.

Your pumps are both not the newest model. The storage loading pump should only run 1-2 hours a day, so the electricity consumption here is not decisive. The circulation pump is also not the eco model with stepless control and differential pressure control, but rather has levels 1, 2, and 3, depending on the heating system’s requirements. But even at level 3 (where it actually shouldn’t run in a single-family house) it’s just under 50W.

There must be something wrong with the control if you already have such electricity consumption on the heating in September.

If you have renovated, maybe you have also replaced radiators or valves? If these no longer fit the heating settings, the pump will basically run at full load continuously against the wall – this should be adjusted.

In general, 23kW is not exactly small for a single-family house – typical old building heating systems. What did you renovate? When replacing, a smaller heating system is probably sufficient. As long as the old one still works, I would rather adjust it. With regular maintenance, your boiler will last a long time (even if it doesn’t work as efficiently as new devices).

Heat pump replacement is subsidized by BAFA. 100€ upon submission of the invoice.
