for a handful of holes, a trenching shovel is enough. for a few more holes, especially if they are deep and not wide in diameter, by hand. and if you want to fence an entire property, such an electric device is definitely worthwhile. as already said, buy, use and then sell it again on classified ads. alternatively, get such a device directly from classified ads

alternatively, some people on classified ads also offer the rental of such devices. for a large enclosure over weeks, however, this is not a solution, rather a "let's finish this today" action.

I was very satisfied with the manual earth auger (20cm). If nothing is in the way, you can drill a hole in sandy soil within a few minutes. If something is in the way, you have to use a pickaxe etc. to remedy the situation. You get noticeably slimmer holes than with a spade, which are usually sufficient to, for example, fix a fence. Making it larger is no problem, by the way; then you widen the hole with the spade and use the earth auger to remove the soil from the hole.

Thank you very much for the many opinions and reports!

We want to build about 50-80 meters of fence (not yet 100% finalized), so that adds up. I really don't want to do that with a (hole) spade.

Since there is no hole auger available for rent in the immediate vicinity, I am considering getting a petrol one and renting it out myself after the work is done. The manual earth auger already costs me a quarter of the machine and means more time effort.

The soil here is rather clayey, and further down there is even construction debris in places. I will probably save a lot of time and effort with the machine, and if 20cm diameter is sufficient for that, then that's fine.

If you buy a good one, I would probably even buy it from you afterwards *g*

Define good? It will probably be the Attika ELB 52. It is sufficient for my needs

Yes, I had already seen that too. However, I have zero experience with the devices. The jumps to the next price range are quite significant.
