Hello everyone,

my name is Peter and our detached house plan is entering the final phase. For this, we have received the following kitchen plan (see attached photos). Currently, the distance between the countertop and the kitchen island is planned to be 1.08 m, so that the dining area does not turn out too small.

What do you think? Would you increase the distance to 1.2 m?

Best regards,
Peter

Definitely, I would go for 1.20m! Otherwise, loading the dishwasher is acrobatics, and if someone is cooking and someone else needs to get to the fridge or the sink, it gets tight. However, I don't think the overall planning is successful. I wouldn't place a cooktop so close to an edge in the passage/movement area, and for me, there would also be too little counter or work surface.

That was also our concern. Would 1.20 m still be too little? Not that the dining area then becomes too small...

I would skip the bench seat and place a dining table rotated 90 degrees freely in the dining area. Then you can equip the back of the island with additional cabinets. The dining table could also be made extendable in case more people come to eat. If you sit at the dining table in the scenario of your kitchen studio, the food from a pot or pan can splash right up your neck.

I really wonder who plans something like that.

And you also have to like cleaning windows when the sink is so close to the window. Without any counter space on the left. That's quite a planning failure.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Let's please go back to the original question. We were only concerned with the distance between the kitchen island and the countertop.
