Hello everyone,

I have read several posts on the topic of water softening systems. The following disadvantages have repeatedly caught my attention.

[*]By removing calcium and magnesium, the sodium content increases; however, too much sodium is not good for health
[*]The pipes can be damaged over time and eventually need to be replaced. This can apparently be counteracted with phosphorus, but that also has no place in tap water

Can anyone of you confirm this? Are there perhaps other ways to prevent limescale?

All nonsense. The sodium content does not increase that much. If you have concerns, you can install an extra line to the kitchen without descaling. This is common practice and also has a significant advantage: the water tastes much better than the descaled water.

Otherwise, it does not affect the pipes, I cannot think of any reason.

However, consider the follow-up costs of descaling. The device needs maintenance and does not last forever. For that, your house will thank you and you will notice it when cleaning. I would not want to go without it!

What follow-up costs should I expect? Which system do you use?

Judosoft Softwell S, actually you should have maintenance done every 2 years, which costs around 200 euros. I mostly do it myself, but you just have to dare to do it. Otherwise, I expect that the system will be junk after 10 to 15 years. Nowadays things don’t last that long anymore. Salt is not a major cost factor.

So I would say the descaling costs you about 200 euros annually.

How do the 250€ break down? Salt + maintenance?

We have a Grünbeck, from 18*dH to 4-6*dH. The water still tastes good, but it is better for the appliances (and there are fewer lime stains).
