Good decision. I would take 0/32 gravel. Remember to compact.

We only placed them afterwards. So where the curbstones go, we dug out about a shovel's width again. This works quite well with a hoe and a shovel.

That should be fine for now. The paving can be done later, and with us, the curbstones are also set afterward.

Curbstones are used when paving. Under no circumstances do it now. They are just tripping hazards or killers for car tires, and besides, the height usually doesn’t fit in the back anyway. Gravel is always good. Slightly slope it at the front and towards the garage (if there is one) so that you can drive in, and that's it. Under no circumstances use recycled material; it is not water-permeable. Depending on what you want to put on it later, that can be a disadvantage.
