Choose the type of house construction - wood or stone? What do you think?

Hello forum, I am Andy and I want to build a small weekend house in 2019. Since I will be retired starting next year, I want to build it completely by myself because I am not under time pressure and because I like to tinker as a hobby anyway. For simplicity's sake, it should be a small shed roof house. Very simple rectangular, about 60 - 70 m² living space, no upper floor, no basement... just a simple small house. Originally, I thought simply to pour a slab, then build up the 4 walls with bricks, put a ring beam on top, then the shed roof... and the shell is done. Lately, however, the idea came to me whether I should rather build in timber frame construction. Now the thing is, I spent several years in the USA and am not entirely averse to timber frame construction. My problem now begins in the planning phase. I am trying to determine the costs of both construction methods and am not making much progress. Can someone tell me which construction method is cheaper? Where can I find programs to determine construction costs? Regards, Andy

This question cannot be answered as is. My personal impression is that timber frame construction in the prefab house segment is at least as expensive as solid construction, with emphasis on AT LEAST. There is an older study that compares the costs of solid construction and timber frame construction in detail over 40 pages and comes to the same result: timber frame construction is more expensive (use an internet search engine with the keywords "Institut für Bauforschung, STUDIE ZUM KOSTENVERGLEICH: MASSIVHAUS / HOLZFERTIGHAUS").

However, since in solid houses you have to build much thicker wall thicknesses to achieve the insulation values of a timber frame wall, you have more living space in timber construction on the same foundation slab and this can even result in an additional room for a small house. This must also be taken into account when calculating prices per square meter ;-)
