Hello everyone,

we are currently having the facade of our house replastered. In the process, we removed the first row of courtyard slabs in front of the facade so that the plasterer can easily reach the bottom.

Now there is the idea to install a dimpled membrane [Noppenfolie] since work is already being done on the facade – mainly to protect the plaster from rising moisture.

Regarding the conditions:
The house was built in 1975. The basement consists of concrete blocks, partially from sandstone (from an old building before the current house). The floors above, i.e., the main part of the facade, are made of Ytong. So far, we have had no problems with moisture or the like in the basement. On the facade, one can slightly see a kind of water line in the base area, but only if you know where to look.

Now our question is whether installing a dimpled membrane makes sense here or is rather counterproductive? And if one does install it, how deep should the basement be exposed for it to have any effect at all?

Thank you very much in advance!

Google "Sockelrichtlinie" or "Sockel-Fibel", you will find help there.

A dimpled membrane is not a moisture seal, but a protection against mechanical stress. The sealing must be done on the wall (or behind the insulation, but it seems there is none there).

A dimpled membrane is rarely counterproductive, but not really absolutely necessary either. And if so, then the membrane up to the lower base.

Hello

Bubble wrap is useless at first.
If you want to do it properly, you have to go down to the foundations.
Expose everything, clean the walls thoroughly, apply or spread 5mm thick coating bitumen, then Styrofoam or Styrodur on top. And then the bubble wrap.

You can ask an expert what the dimpled membrane does to the Styrofoam/Styrodur due to the lateral pressure! That would be a defect that a general contractor would have to fix immediately.

Also, Styrodur does not require separate moisture protection, neither bitumen nor dimples.

Always this hearsay...

Hello Zaba12 What exactly does the dimpled membrane do to the Styrofoam/Styrodur? I’m really interested. Whole houses are built on that. So it seems the stuff is pretty pressure-resistant. So, what exactly does the dimpled membrane do with it? After building 3 houses and doing a lot myself, I would be interested in your knowledge. Steven

The dimples can tear the insulation when filling and simultaneously shifting the dimpled sheet. You can gladly ask an expert. He will give you the same answer, Steven.

Just because many DIYers do it that way doesn't mean it's right. Some clever ones do that even with a waterproof basement :-p, probably for peace of mind.
