We need a new sound system. I bought my current one over 25 years ago. Since then, all technical developments in this field have passed me by. But slowly, it annoys me to only listen to music from the computer.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer?
Minimum requirements:
MP3, USB, Radio, CD

Should it be just a "stereo system," or rather something along the lines of a home theatre for the TV with an AV receiver and various decks?

If it was something decent 35 years ago, like Marantz or Yamaha or so, then there is no progress. But if you have quirks with the old parts, go to a specialty hi-fi store, Saturn also has such a section, take a look at a Yamaha receiver, and the matching CD player. Price-performance speaks for this brand. Solid components, real on and off switch. Pur direct circuit to listen to, for example, classical music undistorted. Good, large speaker terminals, proper radio reception. If needed, also punch without getting hot. High-quality. No plastic cases. As speakers, I recommend that you find out by listening yourself, not by reviews. My son, for example, loves Heco, I find Canton better, as it is less dry, warmer. But he also listens to other music. More lounge and techno, I more hard rock and also classical. You hear yourself in a direct comparison what I mean. And budget around 900-1000 for such a set. It doesn't have to cost more. Karsten

So, unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what a Hometheatre is. Nice speakers would be important to me. Yamaha, then. I'll take a look. What does heco and canton mean?

These are speaker manufacturers. Not exactly newbies. So, your knowledge is limited, I see. Trust your ears.

So, speakers not from Yamaha but another manufacturer. Noted. Thanks already.
