Bricks and clinker - Weather resistance no problem?

Hello everyone,

more important when choosing the exterior facade is certainly the appearance - but the functional properties should not be overlooked either. I personally find brick/clinker very nice.

However, there are various versions of it in smooth, rough, with grooves, etc. etc. As a layperson, I think that these smooth variants should be the most resistant to dirt, etc., or is that not the case?

Can someone report from experience or from other sources?

Smooth, hard-fired, genuine clinker bricks are very hard and do not absorb water. Theoretically, they are easier to clean and provide a worse substrate for lichens or algae. Hand-formed facing bricks, Dutch bricks, etc., are rougher and "softer," can retain water, and theoretically provide a better foundation for organisms and dirt.

I myself have hand-formed facing bricks. So far, I have not been in a situation where the facade needed to be cleaned, and I do not expect that to change in the future. The two neighbors with WDVS have had to paint the base area once. When I spray my dusty windowsills with the hose, I get incredulous looks, because hardly anyone allows that on white plaster.

No matter which stone you choose for a facing masonry, in the end, you have a robust and low-maintenance facade. A proper roof overhang and a splash guard strip are essential for me.

Depends on the clinker.

We are getting this one. It (appears) sensitive, so I’d rather do it.

I think it was probably the classic Mettwurstklinker meant.

I find the rough and also preferably somewhat colorful clinker more beautiful than smooth and monochromatic. However, I wonder whether the disadvantages might be more important than the preferences regarding the appearance.
