Hello everyone,

currently, in our plan, the bathroom is located above the open-plan kitchen.
I have some concerns that it might be disturbing if someone goes to the toilet upstairs or something like that.
You can probably hear it in the living area when someone flushes, right?
Does anyone have experience with this?
Thank you.

Best regards

Certainly. But how often is someone upstairs on the toilet while people are eating or cooking downstairs in the kitchen? For me, it would be worse if the pipe ran through the living area. By the way, we solved it like this (also bathroom above living kitchen), that the drain pipe from the bathroom goes through the wall into the bedroom (you can't see it, it's under the screed) and then down into the utility room, which is right next to the kitchen.

If it is properly insulated, you hear nothing. We have the wastewater pipe from two bathrooms (one of which is currently in use) running through our living room - of course in a proper casing in the corner ;) A sound-insulated pipe was used and on top of that came "soundproofing covers" (those red sleeves) and drywall. Nothing can be heard - even though our daughters often shower and use the toilet upstairs.

: And the toilet flush? Does that go through there too? Our architect said that there is a big difference between just the shower water running, which flows regularly and slowly, and the toilet flush rushing through. He said the latter can hardly ever be completely silent. (of course, it also depends on which corner of the living room the pipe comes down)

Yes, even the big and small shops are affected by this... Our pipe is in the corner where our dining table is. That of course further reduces the chance that something will come from above when the whole family is sitting at the table. The couch is about 8 meters away.
