Dear forum,

we are currently planning our single-family house with an uninsulated basement without heating for cost reasons. The basement is intended to be purely a utility basement and is located 100% underground. The house is to meet the KFW 55 standard.

Is the omission of the insulation problematic or will the ground floor be affected by it?

Then you have to insulate the [EG decke]. And you run the risk that the basement is too cold and develops mold.

For KfW55, the ceiling between basement and ground floor is probably supposed to be insulated, so I would say "no". If the outer wall remains completely below ground level, I see no need to insulate it in the case of a cold cellar. On the other hand, the description suggests a zero-slope situation, so according to my basement formula, the basement is "luxury," and then I understand the "cost reasons" as contradictory to basement construction.

That sounds interesting. We thought about building without a basement for a long time, but then decided to do so because we are building in a rural area and need the storage space. With the basement, we also gain an office and a guest room on the ground/upper floor, as storage rooms were previously planned there.

Our basement is within the thermal envelope, for KfW55 practically every part of the basement in contact with the ground must be insulated.

If you consider this, insulating the basement ceiling alone is not enough. Because hypothetically, the insulation missing towards the walls upwards is lacking and the door to the basement must also be a special part, thinking of my attic ladder.

Also, I think that even if you don't want to heat the basement, which is okay, insulating the basement will not cost more than 5,000€ in materials. To have a constantly damp basement that will always be cold for -5,000€, sorry to say, is pretty stupid for basic basement expenses.

If you have an unheated basement, then in addition to insulating the basement ceiling, you will also need an insulated basement stairway.
