That's how it is. Joe is right. Look at the individual case. The sentence from Zaba about the few thousand euros and the head around it, I find it sh.... because he implicitly says that whoever calculates sharply has no right to build. That's this Westerland man is among themselves attitude again. Karsten

You are interpreting more into it than necessary.

How much are we talking about here for the purchase of the heating system, 2-3k€ between gas and air-water heat pump? And over 20 years I hear/read no financial difference. Especially if you plan with photovoltaic, possibly even cheaper over 20 years and in the best case even "earning" money after 15 years.

So, a gas heating system can be installed in the basement for 5k ready to go. A heat pump costs between 15 to 20k, depending heavily on the model. So, roughly a 10k difference. Heat pumps are also more prone to issues than gas heating systems. And the chimney for a gas heating system nowadays is still a 50 mm pipe plus a 100 mm pipe for fresh air or directly a finished chimney system for 1500 euros. So, I currently see gas heating systems as more cost-effective, especially since they last about 30 years, which you can't say about heat pump compressors. Also, at very low temperatures, electricity consumption is enormously high, so energy costs currently favor gas over heat pumps on an annual consumption basis. Then there is the high initial purchase price, shorter lifespan, and more frequent maintenance for heat pumps.

For gas, the chimney sweep and fireplace inspection cost 60 euros per year and 100 euros every 3 years. Then there is the annual boiler cleaning at 120 euros.

And no, I am not a gas fanboy and do not own a gas heating system.

Thank you, beautifully and practically illustrated. This is exactly how the general contractor advised us here as well, although he mostly sells air-to-water heat pumps, because of KFW 55 or better, he said he himself would still choose the gas boiler. Karsten

I see it differently. Many posts in various forums indicate a significantly shorter lifespan than 30 years. The indestructible cast iron boilers no longer exist as such. Incorrect settings cause boilers to fail quickly due to cycling. One manufacturer stopped supplying spare parts for the control system after ten years. Heat pumps do not generally have a shorter lifespan. But the technician absolutely must be knowledgeable. Otherwise, it will quickly break down and consumption will rise rapidly. Otherwise, only prejudices are listed here, which were caused by incorrect installation. Only the price is variable, as the general contractor charges what he charges. This brings individual consideration back into play.

Experience is, our REH had a Vaillant boiler, from 1999 to 2016, the buyer then replaced it. Although it wasn’t broken. I would have kept it running a little longer. It always lasts 20 years. We didn’t have many repairs, sometimes some valve had to be replaced, that was it. But with a maintenance contract, it had maintenance once a year. That was always around 120 euros. I’ve arranged such a contract again now. That way you are on the safe side. The chimney costs are really negligible, the chimney sweep comes every two years, the chimney itself is just a pipe from the roof, maybe 1.50 meters long. Karsten
