So, now my two cents as well. We have a bit more salary, but my husband still pays a hefty 800 euros in child support for his children from his first marriage. So that really puts a dent in our income. We pay 1400 euros monthly + almost 300 euros additional financing. Plus about 250 euros in ancillary costs. (34 water, 80 heat pump electricity, 70 electricity, 50 internet). Normally, we manage that really well and still had enough money left to finish our really big garden (but all by hand ourselves). Now at the beginning of the year, our little one was born. I had my first day at work yesterday. Conclusion: That can be managed too! We made larger purchases from various special payments (tax, bonus, ...) (mowing robot, fence, a lot of wood, garden shed, several tattoos on my husband ...). We didn’t have to tighten our belt. To calculate this, it would be good if you break down exactly what you currently pay monthly as fixed costs. Especially with insurances, I’m a fan of insurance brokers. Ours tidied things up well during the construction phase and we save over 100 euros monthly and have better conditions. Then check what your wife would get in parental allowance. 1800 euros would be the maximum. Perhaps there are also child supplements at your company. You also have to look at what you would pay in daycare fees for a full spot of 45h/week U2. We currently pay almost 700 euros. Calculate all that and then you’ll get an idea if it’s enough. You can’t afford a long parental leave, that should be clear, but a year should be possible. I myself took 10 months and my husband took 4 months in parallel with me. (for the first 2 months your wife will receive maternity pay, which corresponds to the net salary). Otherwise, for the budgeting: Plan at least 10k more. You will have to upgrade somewhere, trust me! Otherwise, you can build quite well with the standard. We did too! To make it cheaper for you, it would be worth considering how many sqm you really need. We are happy with 150 sqm. My parents have 120 and no one has to squeeze there either.
