Wooden staircase: oiled or lacquered

We have now also decided on our staircase: Hevea oiled

Let's see how the final result will turn out.
I generally find painted stairs too slippery. Without those ugly carpet adhesive strips, you'll eventually break your neck there.

Do stained stairs always have to be painted afterwards? I have never seen a dark, oiled staircase anywhere.
