Hello everyone,

does anyone have experience with overwintering olive and lemon trees indoors in an unheated area? Since we currently have our garden landscaper working in the garden until the end of January, we cannot just pack up and put them away like every year. The effort of constantly rearranging would be too much for me. Above all, something is more likely to get damaged during rearranging. We have an unheated outdoor storage. We would like to place the shrubs there. The temperature is certainly good because it does not get warm. But the light is limited to a skylight in the door. The plants do not like little light for longer than 14 days. If necessary, can I also leave the two moisture-proof lamps on in neutral white with 4,000 K and 3,600 lumens each? Does that benefit the plants, or is that too little or the wrong light color? Does anyone know about this?

Regards

Conditionally.
Your moisture-proof lights with those values will not be sufficient. Daylight is also something different from neutral daylight white. It's only called that because it looks like "real white".
There are expensive and proper growing lamps for plants with ballasts and proper wattage. But then you will see that on the electricity bill as well.
I have managed my lemon tree well in the living room in front of the south-facing window.

Thank you for the assessment. Yes, I wanted to avoid buying expensive equipment. But I already thought that the moisture-proof lights are only conditionally suitable. On the other hand, we will probably have temperatures around between 4-8 °C when it gets frosty outside. I once read that it can be cold and also dark or with little light?

Or if I should buy a grow lamp. How is the light requirement measured?

Cold and dark or bright and warm. For the right need: There are Growing-Seiten. But don't be surprised: they very often address a different target group of plant growth ;) I don't know others.

Assume that the lemon tree will die at 4 degrees. Sorry... The olive needs at least some light. However, I would simply leave it outside. Wrap the pot well, cover the soil, and wrap fleece around the crown (more against wind than against cold). I have never lost an olive outside in winter. If you eventually plant it in the ground, then buy a root heater.

The lemon tree has made it through on the open balcony in our apartment for the past 5 years. Even with moderate to severe frost. With the olives, I just don’t want to take any chances because we are attached to them.

But besides all the junk from China, I have now also found a lamp for overwintering from a German manufacturer. It’s from MeineOrangerie and looks quite decent.
