Which personal contribution is worthwhile in house construction?

Sorry, I haven’t followed the whole thread or read it completely.

From my experience today, I would do significantly less of the work myself. My husband was not home in the evenings for over half a year (I was with the 3 children 50km away and was only busy with supplying the aid workers and organizing and having conversations on the construction site with the craftsmen).

My parents installed the insulation in our wooden house, my husband installed the Fermacell boards with friends. I still don’t like the result. There are gaps that are always visible. The parquet was also installed ourselves. After 15 years, the installation still seems fine to me. Wallpapering and painting shortly before moving in was very exhausting again. Many friends and relatives helped, but the result looked like that in some rooms. Everyone wanted to do it, but no one could!

We lost an incredible amount of our shared life time due to the work done ourselves. Estimated savings between 10,000 and 30,000 euros. Of course, that’s a lot of money too, but if I were to build a new house again, I would actually limit myself to painting only.

Just because this is possible for you doesn't mean it is for everyone.
In my company (almost 70,000 employees in Germany), for example, it is not possible.

The electrician, of course, takes care of connecting the sockets and switches as well as the wiring in the main cabinet. This also ensures the warranty.

But that already involves gross intent. 3 wires, one on the left, one on the right and one in the middle, and then putting the socket into the empty box and placing a cover on it—I would expect a 10-year-old to manage that. And above all, what kind of warranty do you want on that?
