Hello everyone,

we are currently planning our single-family house and it’s about the mailbox. My husband would like a slot in the front door with a flap on the front and back, where the mail can simply be pushed/thrown through. I think it’s total nonsense that on the one hand I install 46cm thick walls and triple-glazed windows for thermal insulation, and on the other hand put in an entrance door with a 30x8cm hole. Or am I seeing this wrong?

What kind of mailboxes do you have and what are your experiences?

I also don't like a mailbox in the door, as some nasty stuff could be thrown directly into the house. I have a completely freestanding mailbox. In the houses where I lived before, they were attached to the house wall. The clattering in the morning by letter and newspaper carriers used to annoy me. Therefore, now freestanding in front of the house.

I would definitely not install a mail slot in the front door system anymore today. We had that at my parents' house, and my house still has it for now (until the front door is replaced soon). There is constantly a draft in the hallway or stairwell because the newspapers and advertisements are not just pushed through. Therefore, I would definitely choose a freestanding mailbox system today. DHL even offers those with an integrated parcel delivery box. I have had my eye on something like that because when the DHL parcel delivery person comes, someone is rarely at home; after all, you have to work. There is also no Packstation in our town, so I am currently having many packages sent to my parents. Luckily, they live only a few hundred meters away and are retired. But even without the parcel option, I would probably stick with the freestanding mailbox. The only reasonable alternative would otherwise be a wall-mounted mailbox.

If you need another argument against the slot: Increased burglary risk. I can imagine that there are species that, similar to a car thief, can handle a wire well. If the door is only pushed shut/latched, the burglar would have an easy opportunity.

This is, in my opinion, the best argument against a mail slot in the front door!

Rhenish greetings from on the road

The company Renz offers mailboxes for installation in side panels with a thermally separated front, windproof insertion slot, and insulated and windproof inner box. However, you have to expect about 3000 euros for this. Similar products are also available from Siedle. Good detailed planning by the architect is a prerequisite for both.
