What garden fence height would you recommend?

Hello,

we have bought a new semi-detached house.

We are currently considering which fence height to choose and suggest to our neighbors.

We have a garden 10m wide and 20m long. The fence should be mounted on the right and left up to the opposite wall. (opposite approx. 140-160cm high)

The fence will later be equipped with privacy slats so that we can sit in the garden with privacy. The fence should have a good height so that you are not constantly being looked at by all neighbors.

We also do not want to chat with our neighbors at the fence every day; we want to have our peace in the garden. If there is something to discuss, you simply go over and ring the bell.

However, the fence should not be too extremely high to avoid looking like a bunker and it should not block too much sun.

What fence height would you recommend?

We were thinking about 160cm, possibly 180cm.

First, I would check whether a development plan, the city, or the state makes any requirements. There are areas with development plans that clearly specify how high (maximum) and in what manner(!) the enclosures must be constructed. Some even have to be planted with hedges.

sorry for the missing info.

I have already checked that and there are no restrictions; we are allowed to erect fences up to 2m

Maybe reconsider a hedge after all. It feels like it offers more privacy and also dampens sound better than those (unfortunately very ugly) privacy strips. So a fence with a hedge directly in front. That makes the garden more of a cozy place rather than just lawn with a double-wire mesh panel. :) For the height, I would go by what you feel comfortable with, especially since the BP doesn’t specify anything. However, I would tend to go for 160 cm and plant some trees here and there at the edges so it doesn’t look like a prison yard.

Thank you for your response:

We definitely need to fence our garden completely because we have a dog and he should not be able to escape anywhere. We also want to leave the dog alone or unsupervised in the garden sometimes (if he wants to in the summer) without having to be afraid that he might possibly escape.

In the middle of the garden, we want to sow grass. Along the outside of the fence, we want to make flower beds so that most of the fence becomes invisible in the garden.

But it will take several years until the plants are big enough to cover the fence, so that is why the privacy strips are also intended so the dog cannot see through.

We don't like a hedge visually at all, so we would rather plant many different flowers between the fence and the lawn.

Staggered. On the right and left near the terrace, preferably the height you mentioned. Otherwise, 120cm is fine. Otherwise, the garden feels like a prison yard. I would also recommend planting hedges. For example, European beech, which can be easily trimmed and retains its leaves in winter. If not trimmed, it grows quite quickly in height (in case such a high boundary is desired after all).
