Hello dear community,

we will receive our turnkey house in January. However, some things still need to be done independently. Our goal is to move in as quickly as possible. Among other things, the walls still need to be done. The walls will be handed over in Q2 quality by a renowned developer in our region. That means we hope it will really be Q2 in the end. Now to my question: What options are there for painting the walls? I have often read that they need to be sanded first and then a primer must be applied before painting. Has anyone had experience with this and can say how the result is? Or should we wallpaper directly? I assume that wallpapering on our own means significantly more work.

Thanks in advance

Painting over Q2: you don’t always have to sand completely but at least apply filler. Whether you need to prime depends on how the wall is absorbing. In principle, a multi-layer application is good. With a mineral coating, you can also use diluted wall paint for this; the old painters called it “appetizing the wall.” This works well.

If the wall is not too bad and the wallpaper has a foamed profile, direct wallpapering may also be possible. At least with a diagonally tilted trowel, I would definitely remove the excess. Good luck!

Best regards
Gabriele

Thank you for the reply.
Purely in terms of time expenditure, wallpapering in any color would then be cheaper and faster, I assume?

You have to look at Q2 first before you can say that. Q2 defines the work steps, not the skills of the craftsman. I would look at it under different lighting, especially with grazing light. If there is not much experience yet, I would choose a wallpaper without a pattern repeat or at least with a clearly visible, not too long repeat, where you paste the wall and lay the dry strip into the paste bed. These wallpapers also do not stretch anymore and a wall is pasted faster than individual strips.

Best regards Gabriele

Full agreement. We only scraped off Q2 and the walls are smooth. Q3 would have been unnecessary there, but that varies from plasterer to plasterer.

OK. May I ask what your procedure was before painting?

Best regards
