Hello,

our terrace is going to be enlarged soon and will receive a new covering. We have decided on the concrete slabs SIREO from the company KOLL. The slabs have the dimensions 60 x 40 x 4.

The contractor suggested laying the slabs in concrete, among other things because the slab is very thin at 4 cm and to prevent the slabs from breaking if cavities form later in the sub-base. Although the terrace will not be driven on, it would also be easier this way, because the slabs can be laid better, since the slabs are not allowed to be compacted (according to the laying instructions).

In the laying instructions from KOLL and also confirmed by inquiry, it is advised against laying concrete slabs outdoors bonded in mortar, because the concrete slabs can change on the surface due to possible waterlogging in the concrete. A bonded construction method would make no sense for concrete slabs, as waterlogging must always be avoided.

I would be interested in the assessment/recommendation of the forum members, because honestly I do not know which option I should decide on.

We have the same dimensions. Edging with natural granite stone, then slabs laid in gravel.

Everything holds up as well. One slab is loose, will be repaired in spring. That`s it. If it’s just slapped together... it will get wobbly ;-)

I don’t know what should break there... unless you drive over it with a tank. Even our children withstand it ;-)
