Hello everyone,

I need your expertise regarding bathroom fittings, specifically Steinberg.

We really like the chrome fittings for the washbasin ([Unterputz - Serie 135 oder 280]) and bathtub ([Wannenrand aufgesetzt 160]) from Steinberg. I only read quite little and not necessarily positive about the quality, which makes me a bit uncertain. Steinberg themselves limit their homepage to a brief "Made in Germany" and otherwise prefer to talk a lot about the great design.

However, in a forum and elsewhere I read that production does take place in China, that it is not of the best quality, and that service as well as availability of spare parts are not core competencies of Steinberg.

Now I am not sure whether these are just individual opinions or if I might have to tear open my walls again after a rather short time because the stuff is defective. Defective fittings can be found elsewhere too, but I naturally want to minimize the risk as much as possible.

Does anyone here know the manufacturer a bit better? Would I, for example, be better off with Hansgrohe (currently focused on the shower) or a higher-quality Grohe series? Or is everything on the same level and I don’t need to be unsettled?

Many thanks for your opinion :)

Steinberg Series 160: Feels like the same quality as Grohe etc. Also not exactly cheap. Used for about three years without any problems.

Hansgrohe and Grohe are similar company fates like Adidas/Puma or Schillig in furniture. I am a fan of Hansa and Hansgrohe. Hansgrohe because I have called them directly twice and received such competent information that it pleased me. I talked with the lady on the phone for 30 minutes about the overhead shower, she then told me about her own model and at some point it just fit for me. But if you like Steinberg, then just take that, they are surely produced in China (what isn't anymore?) but today that’s not necessarily a disadvantage. Besides, something like that can always be completely replaced. For me, the decisive factor is mostly the feel and how the thing can be operated. If it felt good, I would take it without worry.

China itself wouldn't bother me if the quality is right. What I just don't like is when someone writes "made in Germany" and then has it produced elsewhere.

Is it possible, in case of emergency, to completely replace concealed fittings without breaking tiles? Then it wouldn't be so bad if something doesn't fit.

Proven manufacturers are e.g. KWC and Arwa; firstly very durable and secondly you can get spare parts for decades. Hansgrohe is also proven and

I would advise against chrome-plated fittings - the coating peels off after a few years - this cannot be repaired then.

I understand, but nowadays that is hardly ever really verifiable. I once bought a fancy faucet, but the metal sheet was so thin that I didn't like it. For built-in fittings, the corresponding built-in module must also fit, so you would probably have to stick with the respective manufacturer. Based on pure feeling and good experience, I always end up with Hansa and Hansgrohe, not Grohe. I didn’t even know those two brands, they look good but can rather be described as expensive.
