Hello everyone,

for our house I had initially planned a concrete staircase with 40mm solid wood steps.

A carpenter has now suggested, for cost reasons, to manufacture the substructure from OSB instead of concrete.

Does anyone have experience with OSB boards regarding noise, step firmness, etc.?

Attached is a picture of how the staircase should roughly look (under the stairs there will be a storage room for vacuum cleaners, etc.).

Regards, Roland

For cost reasons – does that fit with the building, which to my recollection is not exactly cheap?

I am always a bit skeptical when someone proposes a deviation that results in their part of a component becoming more extensive. Is this carpenter at least also a staircase builder, or does he perceive the staircase as a walk-in closet?

Hello 11ant,

well, since you can't see the staircase from below, it wouldn't matter to me...
Yes, the carpenter is actually very specialized in staircase construction.

How can concrete be replaced by OSB? Concrete would be the load-bearing element, OSB at most an - visually questionable - cladding. What would be the load-bearing structure in the OSB case?

I also always consider the sales or utilization case in every construction project, and you simply don't put plastic hubcaps on a Jaguar. Simply because it scratches the price.

I would have rather associated OSB with shopfitting or trade fair construction.

: So here OSB is the load-bearing element and the cladding is 41 mm solid oak wood... : Well, cheaper doesn't always have to be worse... But I have similar concerns... That's why I wanted to know if anyone already has practical experience with it...
