Hello everyone,

we have permeable paving where you are not allowed to use rock salt in winter during ice and snow. Salt should not be used anyway.

Has anyone here already gained experience with what works well as an alternative? The first thing that comes to mind is gravel. But there are also other alternatives:

- Spreading material made of lime granulate. Just google "Splitt streu Bauhaus". I wonder if there are no white spots because of the lime. However, it is not cheap either.
- Lava spreading material.

Gravel is simply available and inexpensive. But is it also the best method? After all, you have to shovel snow more often, and gravel could also be a nuisance.

What do you use?

Thank you very much for the experiences/opinions.

The alternative is mineral grit or grit. You just have to dispose of it constantly. I have a fairly steep parking space with permeable paving. Starting off in reverse in snow and ice is the challenge there. And even though you’re not supposed to, I mix a handful of de-icing salt on each lane. I’ve been doing this for 11 years now and nothing has happened. After the first rain, everything is gone again.

Sidewalk, I think, has normal paving. Actually, we should not use any salt. But the pavement often becomes slippery as glass, and the grandpa who waddles to the doctor must not fall. So I sprinkle a mixture of salt and sand in the morning. The sand remains when it gets colder again towards the evening and the rain/fog freezes.

I only find praise from various manufacturers - where does this stuff really come from in the end and how is it processed? You can't really say whether it is environmentally friendly beforehand.

Lava ash is good. They use that stuff in Iceland
