We will soon have a visit from an American friend of my daughter. However, my daughter wants to keep her small room to herself, so we are considering whether one of us or the friend could live in the basement. The humidity is already at the upper limit according to the hygrometer, I believe close to 80%. I don't see any mold. The house is 14 years old. The basement has carpet, sofa, foosball table, etc. But whether sleeping there for 30 days is okay or harmful to health, I don't know. How can one find out? When you enter the basement, it smells slightly musty. What do you think? According to the radon map, our area is not particularly affected.

Somehow horror, right? Does the basement have a window? I probably wouldn't mind as an adult sleeping in a room like that for 2 nights, but sending a CHILD to the basement is not really the way to go. I only know it like this, that close girlfriends are inseparable - that also applies to the bed! Maybe clarify the visit with your daughter... and possibly uninvite the girl if your daughter feels awkward with the friend?!

If the parents decide to sleep in the basement for a certain time, that may be OK. But the girl will experience a shock for life if she is banished to the basement. Try again, as has already written, to talk with your daughter. If there is no way in, the only option left is the banishment of the parents to the basement.

I would give my daughter a talking-to and not move. I meant my opinion, even being able to sleep there for 2 days, even just as a self-invited guest

Maybe I expressed myself incorrectly. I meant that parents can consciously decide for or against it. However, the girl who is coming as a guest would have no choice. She will experience the shock of her life if she has to go to the basement. (just imagine – a girl of 12 or 14 years old: "Hi, nice that you’re here. We’re very happy. Oh by the way – there is the door to the basement – that’s where you can sleep for the next while. Welcome!") But there are also parents who voluntarily choose the banishment to the basement out of love for the child.
