Should the utility room be left unplastered?

Hello everyone,

we are planning to build a prefabricated house with a timber frame construction. Inside, the walls are covered with drywall. In the utility room, we are considering not to plaster and wallpaper them at all, but simply leave them as they are. In this room, part of the heating system, washing machine, and storage boxes will be placed.

Is there anything against this from your point of view?

why do you want to do that? Plaster is also always a protection and furthermore serves moisture regulation.

Technically there is nothing against it, but I wouldn’t have wanted that in my house. It always somehow looks unfinished. I am convinced it will annoy you later and after installing all the technology it is hard to catch up on that.

So here it is neither about a large amount of money nor about much time that you gain if you leave it as it is. Therefore, for me that wouldn’t even be worth a thought.

Agree with Climbee. Unplastered drywall walls are also not nice to look at in the utility room and are difficult to change afterward because of the appliances. It will always really look like a construction site and unfinished.

I personally wouldn’t do it. The utility room is also part of it and affects the overall feel of the house. I want to enjoy entering all rooms equally and not have one where I think “OMG, quickly close the door” every time I leave. Yes, it is more work and cost, but in the long run, it is certainly the smarter choice.

I would have it plastered. Once the house is finished, every last "unfinished" bit bothers you ... you don't want that anymore.
