I am currently looking for a house, and I also find some houses where, for example, night storage heaters are still present.

Now my question is approximately how much it would cost to completely convert a house to gas and how or from where such a connection would come.

Approximate costs are enough for me to estimate what the house would cost with this conversion.

Forget it. Installing a gas boiler and laying the connection is done in no time. And then? The boiler heats water, which flows through radiators or underfloor heating and thus provides heat. How do you want to get the water pipes in to supply every room without ripping everything up? Far too expensive. A night storage heater is economically sensible and cannot be replaced. Karsten

So should I better keep my hands off and directly look for something where a gas heating system is already installed?

Depends on the price. As always. The gas connection needs to be installed. You can inquire about the price from the supplier. Then the gas boiler. You’re looking at a price between 7 and 12k€, depending on where you live and what you want (including installation). Then the hot water pipes. I can’t estimate that since the conditions are unknown. The pipes for the new radiators and the radiators themselves also need to be planned. Likewise, you could also have a wall heating or underfloor heating installed. How much personal contribution can you provide? I roughly estimate between 20 and 30k€ all in..

I could easily contribute 30,000 myself, the semi-detached house that I will still look at costs around 190,000€, the plot is 420 sqm, living area 120 sqm, quiet location. Of course, I still have to check if windows and doors are still in good condition, what matters to me is the gas heating, whether the price will be rather expensive or if it is worth it. I could do some of the work.

So what can help in coordination are, for example, the chiseling work. You go through it with the heating engineer, he says which way to go, and you chisel everything free on the weekend. The floor plan is also important. If the rooms are well arranged, you don’t need much piping. But as I said, estimating from a distance is extremely difficult. Therefore, plan on €30,000. Overall, you then need a concept.
