Hello, in our house we have a gas boiler that supplies radiators in the basement as well as the underfloor heating on the ground floor and first floor through two heating circuits. I have a converted office room (about 18m2) in the basement (the basement is 50% underground). There is a radiator installed here. The room gets warm, but the floor (tiled) remains quite cold. My question: could (or would it be sensible to) install underfloor heating here afterward? Or are there other ideas regarding cold floors in the basement? Thanks and regards Ashley

Retrofitting by milling is basically always possible if there is more than 4 cm of screed and the screed is suitable for this. Much more important, especially in the basement, is whether the floor is sufficiently insulated towards the ground. Alternatively, you could consider an electric heating system under the floor covering as support. Replacing the tiles with carpet or PVC etc. would also help.

Thanks for the assessment. I would first have to have the floor checked since I don’t know what condition it is in.
I had already thought about the electric heating as well. It probably just increases the electricity costs.
At home, I still have real wood click parquet lying around. Do you think such a layer on top of the tiles (possibly with additional insulation in between?) would already make a noticeable difference? I’m not familiar with this, and before I lay down the parquet and it ends up having no effect...
Thanks and regards

There is extra-thin insulation material and you could lay parquet on that. If you still need something, you could install an infrared module, for example on the ceiling; this then heats the floor. I think then the radiator might possibly become completely unnecessary since it also consumes energy. Expanding the underfloor heating is certainly a big and expensive undertaking and if you cannot insulate underneath it, the energy is lost anyway. I would be interested in a comparison calculation, including effort, costs, consumption for example over 10 years for the use of this one room. In my opinion, the version with underfloor heating would never be worthwhile in this case.

That is always important.
I have considered replacing the night storage underfloor heating with a water-based one.
But since we are talking about over 200 sqm here, I can heat with electricity for almost 13 years until the break-even point.

I would also try insulation from below and a warming floor, such as carpet or cork, possibly also parquet.

I once read somewhere about a very thin but highly insulating material. Ok, 200 square meters is quite a lot, but as I said, the normal radiator or a later underfloor heating system also needs a decent amount of energy. An infrared solution on the ceiling would probably make sense because these rays warm solid bodies, in this case the floor, when coming from above. You can also use it individually and selectively, which is not possible with underfloor heating. However, I think that the parquet flooring with some insulation underneath would already make a big difference.
