Recently, I came across the possibility of a so-called hard coal boiler, which works similarly to a pellet boiler (side-mounted bunker, conveyor screw, and burner). So-called pea coal (small hard coal lumps) has a very high energy value and is still inexpensive. The kilowatt hour of heat energy is just over 2 cents with a favorable coal purchase, which seems extremely cheap. The coal is available to buy in 25-kilo sacks on pallets.
Has anyone here already had experience with this type of heating? Unlike lignite, hard coal is said not to emit the typical smell of the DDR/Ruhr area of the 1960s. Is that correct?
How reliable is the operation, and are there any special considerations with the chimney sweep or the approval of such a heating system?
How does it behave regarding dirt? Regularly emptying ash would be okay, and since the coal is packaged in sacks, some dust is likely during storage and filling of the bunker, but otherwise, it should be fine.
Does anyone have experience with specific brands?
Thank you very much for your advice
